EMDR THERAPY

Healing from trauma, reconnecting with your inner strength, and moving toward greater peace and wellbeing.

What is EMDR

Sometimes painful or overwhelming experiences continue to affect us long after they are over. You may notice it showing up as anxiety, emotional reactivity, feeling stuck, self-doubt, relationship struggles, or a sense that certain memories still carry too much weight. Even when you understand something logically, your nervous system may still feel caught in the impact of what happened.

EMDR therapy helps the brain and body process experiences that have become emotionally stuck, so they no longer feel as distressing or overwhelming. As painful memories begin to lose their intensity, many people experience greater calm, confidence, emotional balance, and freedom from patterns that once felt difficult to change. Healing does not mean forgetting the past—it means no longer feeling controlled by it.

EMDR offers a structured, supportive approach to healing trauma and distressing life experiences. The EMDR therapy process helps the brain and body reprocess experiences that may feel emotionally stuck, allowing painful memories to lose their intensity over time. While each person’s journey is unique, EMDR therapy generally includes several key elements designed to support healing in a safe way.

Preparation & Resourcing

Before processing difficult experiences, therapy begins with building a strong foundation of safety and trust. Clients learn grounding, coping, and resourcing strategies to help regulate emotions and feel supported throughout the process. This may include mindfulness, visualization, or developing internal resources that help you feel calm, steady, and emotionally prepared.

Identifying Targets for Healing

Together, you and your therapist identify memories, experiences, beliefs, or present-day triggers that continue to feel emotionally activating or connected to current struggles. You do not need to share every detail of a painful experience for healing to occur — the process moves at a pace that feels supportive and manageable.

Reprocessing Through Bilateral Stimulation

During reprocessing, clients briefly bring attention to aspects of a memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation — often through guided eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds. This gentle back-and-forth process is believed to support the brain’s natural ability to process and integrate experiences in a new way. As memories are reprocessed, many people notice distress decreasing, new insights emerging, and painful experiences feeling less emotionally overwhelming.

Integration & Moving Forward

As healing unfolds, clients often experience meaningful shifts in how they think, feel, and respond to life. Memories may feel less emotionally charged, negative beliefs can soften, and a greater sense of confidence, calm, and emotional flexibility often emerges. The goal is not to erase the past, but to help it feel less burdensome so you can move forward with greater ease.

Length of Treatment

The length of EMDR therapy varies depending on your goals, history, and the complexity of what you are working through. Some clients experience meaningful relief in a shorter period of time, while others benefit from longer-term work, particularly when healing from complex or longstanding trauma. Therapy moves at a pace that feels safe, individualized, and supportive of lasting healing.

Benefits of
EMDR Therapy

EMDR is one of the most researched and effective treatments for trauma and distressing life experiences — and more importantly, it helps people create meaningful, lasting change. Rather than simply managing symptoms, EMDR supports deeper healing by helping the brain process painful experiences so they no longer feel as emotionally overwhelming or disruptive in daily life.

Effectiveness

EMDR is a well-established, evidence-based therapy shown to be highly effective in treating trauma, anxiety, PTSD, and other emotional challenges. By helping the brain reprocess distressing experiences, many clients experience significant relief from symptoms, reduced emotional reactivity, and an increased sense of calm and stability. The goal is not to erase the past, but to lessen its hold on the present.

Emotional Healing

Many people enter therapy feeling stuck — understanding their struggles intellectually, yet still feeling emotionally impacted by what they have experienced. EMDR helps bridge that gap. As painful memories become less emotionally charged, clients often experience greater self-compassion, emotional balance, confidence, and freedom from patterns rooted in past experiences.

Lasting Change

As healing unfolds, EMDR can help clients:

Reduce the emotional intensity of painful memories and distressing experiences

Feel less reactive, anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally stuck

Develop greater resilience, confidence, and emotional regulation

Move forward with a stronger sense of safety, empowerment, and connection to themselves

The goal is not simply symptom relief — it is creating lasting healing so the past no longer defines how you experience the present.

EMDR therapy unfolds in a thoughtful, structured process designed to help clients feel safe, supported, and ready for healing. While every person’s experience is unique, EMDR generally moves through a series of phases that help prepare for deeper work, process difficult experiences, and strengthen a sense of stability moving forward.

Phase 1: Preparation & Building Safety

Healing begins with building trust and creating a foundation of safety. Together, we explore your history, current concerns, and goals for therapy while developing tools to help you feel grounded and supported. EMDR is never about pushing too quickly into painful experiences — the process moves at a pace that feels manageable and respectful of your readiness.

Phase 2: Reprocessing Painful Experiences

Once a strong foundation is in place, EMDR helps the brain process distressing memories that may still feel emotionally stuck. During this phase, clients briefly bring attention to aspects of a memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation — often through guided eye movements, tapping, or alternating sounds. This gentle back-and-forth stimulation supports the brain’s natural ability to process experiences in a new way, allowing memories to feel less emotionally overwhelming over time.

Phase 3: Integration & Moving Forward

As distressing experiences begin to lose their emotional intensity, many clients notice meaningful shifts in how they think, feel, and respond. Greater calm, confidence, and emotional flexibility often emerge as old patterns begin to loosen. The focus becomes not only healing the impact of the past, but feeling more grounded, resilient, and connected in the present.

EMDR is not about forgetting what happened — it is about helping painful experiences feel less distressing, so they no longer hold the same power over your life.
