Chemistry vs Emotional Connection: What Builds Lasting Relationships

I was recently invited to contribute to an article exploring an important relationship question: What matters more in lasting relationships—chemistry or emotional connection?


While chemistry can create excitement and attraction, emotional connection is often what helps relationships feel safe, meaningful, and sustainable over time. In my work with couples, I often see that strong relationships are built not only on attraction, but also on trust, emotional responsiveness, shared values, and the ability to navigate challenges together.


Of course, chemistry and emotional connection are not mutually exclusive. Healthy relationships often benefit from both. But when couples are struggling, it can be helpful to look beyond initial attraction and ask deeper questions about emotional safety, communication, and connection.
